With a history that started back in 1948, the Ford F-Series is now one of the best sold pick-ups on the US market. The model is currently in its twelfth generation and for the 2013 model year, it has been updated with a new design and all-new driver controls technology.

The 2013 F-150 has received an updated front end, with a new grille and HID projector headlamps. Customers can also opt for new 18 and 20" wheels, as well as the choice of three new hues including Blue Jeans Metallic, Kodiak Brown Metallic, and Ruby Red Clearcoat Metallic. The F150 can also now be ordered with SYNC with MyFord Touch voice-activated driver controls.

Under the hood, Ford has placed a choice of four engines: a 302 HP 3.7 liter V6, a 360 HP 5.0 liter V8, a 411 HP 6.2 liter V8, and a 365 HP 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine. All of the engines can be mated to a fuel-saving electronic six-speed automatic transmission with tow/haul mode.


While the exterior modifications done on the F-150 aren’t as impressive as some might have expected, the pick-up is now a step closer to the Super Duty family. Ford is offering bold new grilles combining fresh designs with instantly recognizable F-Series cues. Customers can also choose between 18" and 20" wheels and HID projector headlamps as available options.

The interior has also been updated with new environment colors including a Steel Gray interior on Lariat and a Black interior for King Ranch, new Alcantara seats for the FX Appearance Package, and new choices of Black or Pecan leather seating for the Platinum series.

The Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum and Limited series are now offered with SYNC with MyFord Touch MyFord Touch voice-activated driver controls coupled with an all-new, large 8-inch LCD color touch screen mounted in the center stack.

The 2013 Ford F-150 is being offered with a choice of four powerful engines, ranging from a standard 302 HP 3.7 liter V6 up to a very powerful a 411 HP 6.2 liter V8. The mid-grade engine is a 360 HP 5.0 liter V8, but customers that are more economical can choose the 365 HP 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine. All of the engines can be mated to a fuel-saving electronic six-speed automatic transmission with tow/haul mode.

As previously mentioned, the Ford F-150 is one of the most successful pick-ups on the US market, but the competition is still very strong. Customers can opt to go with models like the Dodge Ram 1500, the Chevrolet Silverado, or the GMC Sierra - all of which have a powerful history on the market as well.

Also refreshed for the 2013 model year, the Ram 1500 is one of the F-150’s most powerful competitors. It comes with either a 305 HP 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine or a 395 HP HEMI 5.7-liter V-8. As for the Silverado and Sierra - a revamp is planned for the 2014 model year, so until then, Ford can relax.


New Ford EcoSport this year in SA

Ford took its opportunity at the 2012 Auto Expo to announce the globalization of its new EcoSport compact SUV - the second of eight new vehicles that Ford plans to offer worldwide. The new model will combine best-in-class design, technology, quality, and safety to aim itself towards a new generation of consumers.

The new Ford EcoSport will be powered by the newest and smallest-ever 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine and uses twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) to further improve performance and economy.

"EcoSport has a tough, robust attitude that says ‘I can play with the big boys’," said J Mays, group vice president, Design, and chief creative officer, Ford Motor Company. "But it also makes you want to play. It’s friendly and sociable, and this unique mix is its secret formula. That’s why it is so appealing. EcoSport is perfect for crowded urban streets and it inspires you to seek adventure away from the city too."


The new EcoSport SUV combines Ford’s new global design language with an aerodynamic honing for fuel efficiency, a short, raked hood, and a distinctive profile. The car’s front end is defined by a wide hood with modern, oblique headlamps and a high-mounted trapezoidal grille which gives the vehicle an element of pride and a signature Ford face. At the rear, the car has a large rear window which wraps around to the sides along with distinctive taillights.

For the interior, Ford will deliver the same high levels of craftsmanship, material quality, and quiet isolation from noise that have been central elements in other new-generation global products currently offered by Ford.

"The expressive exterior of this all-new new vehicle with its distinctive compact SUV character creates some very strong expectations for what you’ll see in the interior," Mays said. "When we reveal the interior of the new EcoSport, it will be just as expressive and well-crafted as the exterior. It’s a very important part of the inviting spirit of EcoSport."


altFor the new EcoSport, Ford is offering an all new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine that delivers a total of 118 HP and 125 lb-ft of torque available from 1,300-4,500 rpm. This engine is offered with twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) to further improve performance and economy and is mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

"The 1.0-litre EcoBoost delivers great low-speed responsiveness, power, torque and smoothness. To produce an engine with such impressive performance and fuel economy clearly reflects our commitment to be class-leading in fuel economy around the world."



The Ford EcoSport will be launched on the Indian market first, and that market alone will bring a number of competitors for the SUV, but the biggest competitor will be found on the European market: the Mercedes B-Class. The Mercedes B-Class has the advantage of being offered with a wide range of engines, including a new four-cylinder petrol engine with direct injection and turbocharging and a new diesel engine. This range of engines will produce between 122 HP and 156 HP, putting the 118 HP of the EcoSport to shame. Let’s hope that where the EcoSport lacks in power, it will make up for in fuel efficiency.


2014 Mazda 6

Now that the new generation Mazda6 has officially hit the streets, it’s time to switch focus to the next great thing to come out of Mazda. According to AutoExpress, the Japanese company is considering a performance version of their brand new sedan - something in the spirit of the company’s MPS models.

The announcement was made by Hiroshi Kajiyama, program manager for the car, who said that such a model is being looked at: "There is a high potential for this, and it would be helpful to the brand." He also said that the new version could be even lighter than the standard Mazda6, which is already 110 lbs lighter than the previous generation. As for the engines to be used for the MPS version, turbocharged versions of both petrol and diesel engines are being considered.

The new Mazda6 targets models like the Audi A4 and the BMW 3-Series, making their performance versions the primary targets for the Mazdaspeed6. If built, the future Mazdaspeed 6 will arrive on the market sometime in 2014.

Could the sleek profile of the Evos be what Ford has planned for the new Mustang?

The Mustang is up for a styling revolution. So claims the Wall Street Journal, or at least one of its scribes Matt Ramsey does. When the Blue Oval launched the fifth-generation Mustang in 2005, it was one of the first manufacturers to use a retro muscle car-inspired theme on an important model in its line-up. But those design cues are now long in the tooth…

Of course, it took rivals Dodge and Chevrolet a few years to catch the hint and do something similar with the Challenger and Camaro respectively, but both models are relatively new compared with the current Mustang. Even though Ford recently performed a facelift, perhaps the Mustang is due for a radical makeover after eight years of duty.

Ramsey’s reasoning is simple enough. The current Mustang appealed most to those who might have remembered the days when the first- and second-generation Mustang were still doing the rounds. Now, argues Ramsey, Ford would do well to attract Generation Y consumers, people born between 1980 and 1999.

The key, Ramsey believes, lies in the Evos concept car, which was introduced to the public at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Of course, the Evos appeared to be nothing more than a design study to many, until the Fusion/Mondeo was revealed to have borrowed many of its styling aspects. Ramsey says that the new Mustang won’t stray too far from the Evos in terms of its exterior.

Apparently, those who have seen the new Mustang say it will retain its round headlamps and shark-like nose though. With the Mustang’s 50th anniversary coming up in 2014, it makes sense for the Detroit giant to come out swinging, and the Evos concept could just be the revolution Ford envisages for the Mustang.

Last week, there were rumours of Mustangs being made available in right-hand-drive format (as part of a drive to infiltrate the European market) in its next generation.

Trapezoidal grille once again dominates a Ford front end

 NEW DELHI. Ford has given international media a first glimpse of the new EcoSport (pronounced echo sport) – a compact utility vehicle that will eventually be introduced in over 100 markets – ahead of the New Delhi Auto Expo, where it will head up the company’s display.

Developed in Brazil, the EcoSport’s compact dimensions (roughly similar to that of Daihatsu’s Terios) should make it easily maneuvered on congested roads and in tight parking spaces. But the focus of the “One Ford” global car strategy makes the EcoSport attractive not only for growing markets in Asia and Africa.

Design-wise, what the styling team strove to eliminate was the boxy connotation that goes with vehicles of this size that make it to developing markets. Thus, the EcoSport boasts a sleek appearance and cues adopted as part of the kinetic design language that has found its way on all of the Blue Ovals’s products.

Notable elements that add to the EcoSport’s bold stance are the familiar trapezoidal grille up front, wraparound headlamps, narrow side windows and a rising shoulder that accentuates the car’s raised ground clearance, and spare wheel holder on the tailgate in similar fashion to that of the Everest SUV.

More importantly, the EcoSport also features the all-new EcoBoost engine – a turbocharged 1,0-litre, three-cylinder unit with direct injection and variable camshaft timing that Ford claims will offer consumers impressive power, torque and low-speed response. The smallest member of the EcoBoost family will produce in the region of 90 kW and 170 N.m of torque – from as low down as 1 700, all the way up to 4 500 r/min. It also emits less than 140 g/km of CO2.

“Fitted with a long list of innovative technologies, the 1,0-litre EcoBoost is one of the most technically advanced and efficient engines Ford has ever designed and produced,” says Joe Bakaj, Ford vice president of global powertrain engineering. “This new engine demonstrates Ford’s laser focus on improving fuel economy without compromising performance.

The unveiling of the EcoSport is the latest phase in Ford’s plan to introduce 50 new vehicles and powertrains to Asia Pacific and African regions by mid decade. The rise of this region as an international volume player is evident in Ford’s recently-announced investments with regard to manufacturing and engine plants in India – totaling nearly 1,2 billion USD. The EcoSport will be produced at the integrated Chennai plant , which has a production capacity of 200 000 units per annum.

“Following the success of the game-changing Ford Figo and ‘tech-tastic’ Fiesta sedan, the all- new Ford EcoSport will certainly broaden our showroom offering in India, keeping in step with the aspirations of our customers,” says Michael Boneham, president and managing director, of Ford India. “With its tremendous value story, we’re confident this compact SUV will greatly bolster our presence in the competitive Indian market.”

The EcoSport has also been confirmed for South Africa, but when exactly it can be expected on home soil is not yet known.
